St. Francis High School Has Shown Supremacy in Maryland County Again

By Mohammed T. Sall, class of 2012

In the recent inter high schools competition organized by the Gentle Men Club in Harper City in collaboration with Tubman University, St. Francis high school proved supremacy over the other high schools. Ten high schools took part in the competition, and it was composed of both debate and quizzing. The evaluation took place at the Gallery of Tubman University and Pleebo city Hall, where as the grand final was at the Harper City Hall.

With the quality education St. Francis School is giving their students, it draws the attention of the Marylanders and the country at large. The school contested in quizzing and debate and didn't even loose a single match and reached the grand final. To the ultimate surprise of everyone, St. Francis high school walked away with the medals of both quizzing and debate first winner.

Students of St. Francis high school were rejoicing while taking away their worthy medals and praises.

I can imagine that day was another great day that our alma mater is still keeping the spirit of the school.

Bravo to the staff and students.

PERSONAL VIEWS OF OUR GREAT SCHOOL
By Mohammed Sall, St. Francis "2012"
(posted in original context)

I graduated from the St. Francis high school last year. It is my pleasure to be alumni of that noble institution. The school gives you your money worth back in terms of standard and quality education. The school still maintains its motto (KNOWLEDGE IS POWER). It is always number one compare to the other schools. Even though it was not the first school in Pleebo but the fact is that being the first does not make you the best, but your products make the difference. With collective effort of staffs and students, the school always produces the best results in the WAEC (West African Examination Council) in Pleebo. The graduates of the year 2012/2013 were the most impressive ones. The school sent 52 candidates and all of them made a successful pass. I am proud to be among the ones that made a historical record. The school came first in pleebo. The principal, her Excellency Mrs. Regina Klo Topor thanked the students for the good results made and encouraged undergraduates to follow the foot print of the graduates of the 2012/2013 academic year.

It is a great challenge to the school to continue its hard work that one day it would be on the standard of taking WASSCE (West African Secondary Senior Certificate Examination).  Though the school results over the past years in the West African Examination Council have been on the average, the school is lack of some important learning facilities, such as Computer lab, Laboratory and Library with sufficient books. The school has to be very vigilant in advancing the learning facilities. I have heard rumors of a computer lab to be established in the school since I was in grade 8. Now I am a graduate it has not been provided yet.

In competition the school is desperate, it has good record. I can remember when I was in the elementary years ago. We used to have a spelling competition among the various classes every day after recess. It used to be a very tough competition. My sponsor who always encouraged us to win over the other classes but it was not easy, because each class wanted to win. In mathematics each time the teacher enters the class, he will ask his students to say the time table. The time table was the most worrying thing to the students, every student must take part.

The school went against St. Stephen in spelling competition. It was in the year 2006, it is the year I received my first honor certificate from the school. We defeated them on their campus. Our sister school, OUR LADY of FATIMA invited us on their gala day celebration. They requested a challenge in football, basketball, and spelling competition. At that time I was among the spelling competitors. When the competition started we were at lead but unfortunately we were defeated with one point. For the basketball we defeated them and the football game ended up in a draw. In 2009 the school took part in the AMERICAN SPELLING BE COMPETITION. The school contested with the other schools in Maryland. The school was able to sent two candidates to represent the county In Monrovia. They went as far as the last round to qualify for the final. They were weakened and dropped in the last round. They were awarded with certificates and some school materials to the contestants.

In sports the school performs very poor. Three years has passed, it hasn’t win trophy from all the tournaments they took part in. The school is taking little attention in sports. Just last year I served as the president and the administration responds poorly when it comes to sport. It was during my term I understood this situation, before then I used to shift the blame on our leader. Last year the school took part in the TUBMAN UNIVERSITY tournament. It was not easy for us to take part. We participated in football, basketball, track and field. For the football and track and field we were eliminated at the early stage. The basketball players tried their best to prove to the administration that sports is also important. We went against FATIMA in the final and defeated them with only one point. It was not easy to win over this school; they always give us hell, booth in academic and sports. Our Lady of Fatima is the only school to give us hell when it comes to competition, but we managed to beat them at times.

ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL is a great and well known school in Liberia. It had taken responsibilities in educating people and still continuing its hard work. But, the school has to prioritize essential learning facilities in the school such as Computer lab, Laboratory, and a rich Library.

At least, this will help students build up their learning skills. A school without Library is like a soup without salt. The school should also consider sports, and give more attentions in its rightful time.

This is not to castigate the school, but it is my experience. It is better to outline the weaknesses of the school too, then to ignore it.

I love this school so much, and I want it to be the best in all aspects both academic and sports. God bless St. Francis School.
